Mad Men Season 3 promo. (Photo: AMC)
We all know how Obama partly did it: With tons of house parties. He used a grass-roots system to start a revolution.
And so it can be with Mad Men. A revolution of MADness, but oh so elegant, in 1960s style.
As has already been publicized, AMC and Banana Republic are kicking off the Season 3 Mad Men starter on August 16 with a photo contest. The contest runs July 21-Aug 11 and the entrant clothed in the coolest Mad Man attire will secure a walk-on role on the show.
But why stop there? Why not take it a step further? What if there are so many Mad Men house parties, pool parties, office parties throughout the fall it’s crazyville? What if there are so many house party “character” photos uploaded to twitter it's akin to fall madness?
There is already the twitter Mad Men character phenom, so let’s ramp it up a notch and show the old school marketers what the new twitter kid on the block is capable of.
The photographers I have spoken with are revved, and have come to the party with creative photo ideas to help with contest submission, some free, some with a nominal cost, and some as keepsakes. So whether you take your own photo at a house party, or on your own in your room, or set up through a photographer, let’s make it something to remember.
Twitter
After you submit to the contest, or even if you don’t submit to the contest, post your Mad Men photos throughout the fall on twitter, using the hash tag: #madcastparty.
Photographers
Professional photographer Alex Gatscher, out of Nashville, is an idea maven and has already started the ball rolling with complimentary Mad Men pool parties every Saturday until the contest deadline. Come dressed in appropriate Mad Men '60s attire and she’ll snap your photo and get it online for you to download. Her website is www.photoshoot21.com and you can reach her on twitter at @bajastudio21
In the Bay Area, professional photographer Monica Laipple (www.monicamichelle.com) is offering a few Mad Men packages, both for contest submission and as future keepsakes. For the contest, Monica is offering “Mad Men Glamour,” with movie star lighting and magazine editing, along with optional make-up. The package is $60, with a 8 x 10 high-style photo as a keepsake, and a digital file for uploading, (Baby,it’s all in the lighting!)
Monica also offers the following ongoing packages:
"Mad Men 3-Martini Lunch" - The ultimate in ‘60s male bonding, this package includes the “Twittertini” cocktail (famously created by top Mad Men twitterer @frankadman), full props and styling.
"Are you a Betty or a Joan" - For those who think female, this package includes Twittertinis, full props and styling, for the ultimate Grace Kelly sophistication or Marilyn Monroe sexiness.
Any photographers setting up Mad Men packages, please email me or tweet me at @madmenexaminer and I will try and post them. I look forward to everyone’s suggestions.
Let’s spread the word, and make it BIG. Don Draper is in the house.
