Imagine if President Bush had given billions of tax dollars to random citizens to spend more on an industry Republicans had incompetently destroyed, then illegally taken over, and continued to mismanage into the ground. Liberals would be up in arms crying "corporate welfare" and demanding he be held accountable for his mistakes, rather than getting to bury them at everyone else's expense.
Welcome to the "Cash for Clunkers" program.
It gives people tax dollars to prop up an auto industry decimated by obscenely outlandish labor union abuses and incessant government meddling (none of which was remedied as Obama tossed up this phantom "corporate greed" smokescreen and pretended more government was the answer), all so that it can look a little less utterly botched by liberal stupidity. It is yet another senseless, exceedingly inefficient bailout for failed Democrat policies, re-packaged as an environmental initiative.
The program went bankrupt almost immediately as people scrambled to make their neighbors pay for their new cars, which liberals somehow hilariously interpreted as a success...as opposed to proof that such immoral and fundamentally unfair wealth redistribution schemes cannot be sustained. And now, as with all the left's dysfunctional nanny state welfare programs, Democrats are seeking untold billions more in revenue to keep it going.
"No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the closest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this Earth." --Ronald Reagan
