Best selling author, Hunt Henion, PhD. has a lifetime of study and insight under his belt, including initiation into Transcendental Meditation, Buddhist practice, serving as a cleric for Eckankar, and a PhD. in Religious Studies.
His books include, The Big Fake Out, The Don Q Point of View, and Looking Seeing and Knowing.
I recently had the opportunity to interview Hunt about his views on life's big questions.
But first, how I got that opportunity is a story worth telling.
Hunt is the Examiner.com Practical Spirituality Examiner , and I work the Boise Spirituality Examiner beat. In a strange but true synchronicity convergence, Hunt and I published articles with nearly identical titles, intriguingly similar themes, and both on the very same day.
The articles were so similar, in fact, Examiner.com got them mixed up. If you clicked on my article it would link to his article, and if you clicked on his article it linked to mine. There were apparently too many "coincidences" for a computer system to handle.
Take a look at Hunt's article and my article, to see what I'm talking about.
Initially, this mix up caused a flutter of irritation and some scurrying about to resolve the "problem". But after reading each other's articles we realized this was a lucky chance to meet a like-minded friend. Just days before this, I had set an intention in my meditation to meet more like-minded friends. There are no coincidences.
So, now that I've acknowledged that cool little occurance, here's my interview with Hunt:
BSE: What do you believe is the purpose of life?
HH: The purpose of life -- that ol' thing -- Okay, according to Hunt...The purpose of life is to learn and grow. Genesis says we came here to eat of the fruit of goodness and evil. In other words, to learn about goodness and evil. These lessons set up karma that brings us more of the same, and so we go around and around, life after life, eating the fruit of goodness and evil until we get indigestion. It's only when we fast from that diet that we're open to a higher purpose - learning more about Love.
BSE: What do you believe would most benefit your fellow humans to understand about life?
HH: That Love is the creative intelligence behind all we see. It's the only real power in the Universe. So learning about love increases our real power - even though we often have to give up what we think is most important to align with that power.
BSE: By what means have you obtained the greatest insights, and why?
HH: Life - there really isn't any other way. Live expecting that you can know whatever you need. Read, expecting to find your answers. Ask on the inner, and trust your insights; meditate on them. Still, in the end there really isn't any substitute for living and caring about those in our life. It doesn't matter if you can't afford seminars. Everyone has their own unique connection to all they need to know, and that knowledge is illustrated in your life. Your insights result from your life, and your life reflects your insights.
BSE: What appears to be the most useless side track you have taken on your journey?
HH: Self pity is a real waste of time. Ditto with feeling defeated. All energy is creative and will eventually work out one way or another. When you don't trust that, life puts you in the corner for a "time out."
BSE: Have you always had clear recollection of past lives? If not, by what method did you gain clear recollection?
HH: I've always have visions and images that I suspected were from past lives, but didn't know for sure until we asked in channeling. Then, when an image was validated, suddenly I'd start to see more details about that life. That's what started "The Don Q Point of View. " I was told that I was the crazy old man who was Cervantes's model for his Don Quixote. When I came across stories Cervantes told in his book, Don Quixote, I'd suddenly remember the actual events. Also, trying to understand who I really was would lead me to other stories before and after that lifetime.
BSE: Has recollection of past lives clarified and informed your current life? If so, how?
HH: Are you asking if my past lives have helped clarify my knowledge of who I am in this lifetime? If so, absolutely! Everything I know about myself I can now point to a past life or two that illustrates that quality. I also have that history to fall back on when I start losing faith in myself.
BSE: By what standards do you discern the truth of a belief?
HH: If a thought fills you with joy, at least part of that thought is definitely true. If something or someone fills you with fear or dread, at the core of that negative feeling is an illusion. We may not know instantly exactly what the illusion is. Still, we can dismiss it. Start with this premise instead: "We are indestructible, and surrounded by a loving universe." Then proceed with caution.
Another good rule of thumb is that when someone makes you feel bad, that's a reflection on them, not you. A spiritually aware and balanced person will always make you feel good about yourself and life.
