Kate Austen
From day one on the island, Kate has been a tough, private person. That's probably because she's a criminal trying to hide her past. Though her previous life is pretty sketchy, Kate has a heart of gold and is totally fearless. Every mission into the creepy jungle, every time someone needs to be rescued, and every time danger is part of the plan, Kate is there. She is a restless person who craves freedom and adventure.
Reason for travel: Kate was being pursued by a U.S. Marshal and eventually, she ended up hiding in Australia where she got herself caught. Kate was being brought back to the states to stand trial when the plane crashed. The Marshal died, but Kate was soon discovered to be the prisoner he was escourting. While some of the other survivors were afraid of her at first, she earned her keep by helping others (and in particular, Jack) survive.
Flashbacks: Kate kept her crime a secret for a long time before it was revealed that she murdered her abusive father. Her flashbacks consist mainly of her on the run: she was caught once and escaped, got married, accidentally caused the death of a childhood friend then robbed a bank to get a toy plane that belonged to him. She is always motivated by her desire to connect with or help others. In fact, she only murdered her father to save her mother. Unfortunately, her mother was the one who turned Kate in.
Island life: On the island, Kate is very close to Jack, and serves as his second in command. She is a tracker and often leads missions into the jungle. She also shares a special bond with Southern cutie Sawyer with whom she is a common bunk-mate (wink, wink) but her heart belongs to Jack. Though Kate knows if she ever went back to the real world she would be arrested, her desire for freedom motivates her to be rescued...
Post-island life: ...which she is. She is one of the Oceanic Six. Though her new life is also a bit sketchy. In a shocking twist, Kate is revealed to be raising Claire's son, Aaron as her own. After standing trial for her crimes, her guilty, dying mother refused to testify and Kate was set free and she now lives a happy life as simply a mother. Her relationship with Jack fell apart partly because of his issues, but also because she is fulfilling a promise she made to Sawyer... but what is it?
Fun Facts: In the original drafts of the first episodes, Kate wasn't a convict. She was a happily married lady whose husband was in the missing tail section of the plane when it crashed. The writers decided to give her a more complex storyline and instead created a character named Rose with a missing husband.
