Desmond Hume
Though Desmond is not one of the survivors of Oceanic 815, he has become a beloved cast member who has been on the island for three years yet doesn't understand it more than any of the rest of us. He has a past filled with missed opportunities, disappointment and undying love that gives Lost a certain sweetness no one can resist. Desmond is restless to get off the island and be reunited with the woman he loves.
Reason for travel: Desmond fell in love with Penny Widmore, daughter of Charles Widmore, a rich man who didn't approve of the relationship. Desmond wanted to ask Penny to marry him but instead broke her heart and joined the Royal Scots Regiment of the British Army. After being dishonorably discharged and serving time in prison, he entered a sailboat race sponsored by Charles Widmore. He planned to win in order to prove himself to Charles and win Penny back. During a storm, he hit his head and woke up on the island.
Flashbacks: Desmond has some of the most elaborate flashbacks/time jumps. Flashbacks reveal he almost married a woman named Ruth before joining a monastery and meeting Penny. He joined the Army and was thrown out for not following orders and joined the sailboat race to "get his honor back". After the hatch exploded, Desmond woke up in the past and he saw it as a chance to correct mistakes (like marrying Penny). Eventually he woke up on the island and started having visions of the future, mainly about Charlie's death. In the fourth season, he began experiencing time jumps when he went to the freighter, and thanks to Daniel Faraday and his connection to Penny, he went back to normal and stopped experiencing time jumps and visions.
Island life: Desmond was rescued by Kelvin Inman and brought to the hatch where he started his job of pushing the button-- putting in the numbers 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42 into a computer every 108 minutes. Kelvin told him he worked for the Dharma Initiative and that their replacements would come soon. Three years later, nobody came and Desmond accidentally killed Kelvin during an argument. That day, he didn't push the button on time which he believes is the reason why Oceanic 815 crashed. After fighting with Kate, Locke and Jack in the hatch, he sailed away but returned two weeks later. He joined the group and contributed to their rescue by going into the underwater station with Charlie and turning off the jamming equipment.
Post-island life: After the freighter blew up and the island disappeared, it was Penny who rescued the Oceanic Six. Desmond and Penny finally got together and are living a life in hiding so Charles Widmore can never find them.
