Lost profile: Charlie Pace

Charlie Pace

Fate. Along with redemption, this is one of the greatest themes on Lost. It is also the word Charlie Pace ominously wrote on his fingers during his first night on the island. Charlie also asked the very obvious yet important question that has set the stage for the entire mystery of the show: "Where are we?" The young has-been found redemption on the island as well as a family and was a perfectly flawed character from the beginning to his devastating, heroic end.

Reason for travel: Charlie went to Australia to beg his brother Liam to rejoin their band, Driveshaft. Liam was married and kicked his drug addiction; a feat Charlie has yet to accomplish. Liam said he wouldn't rejoin the band and Charlie boarded the plane back to L.A.

Island life: Charlie started his time on the island with a little bit of heroin still in his possession. Eventually Locke helped him kick the habit and Charlie began an honest living while courting pregnant Claire. He became a sort of father figure to baby Aaron but his relationship with Claire was on the rocks when he discovered a bounty of Virgin Mary statues filled with heroin that he couldn't bring himself to destroy. Slowly, he earned back everyone's trust. But it was not to last; Desmond began having visions of Charlie's death. His fate was sealed when he swam to an underwater Dharma station to turn off some equipment that was jamming transmissions that could get them all rescued. Charlie drowned; a heroic death to save the friends and the woman he loved.

Post-island life: Though Charlie did die in the Dharma station, he appeared to Hurley after they were rescued. He told Hurley that the island people needed him and he had to go back.

Fun facts: Originally, Charlie was going to be a middle-aged has-been, but Dominic Monaghan played the part so well, writer's changed him to a young man.
