Start practicing for the annual Polar Plunge on January 1st! Get out those ice cubes and fill up those bathtubs (reminds me of the old fever break method our mothers used to use). The Longmont Humane Society is experiencing growing pains and it needs you to get downright chilly for the cause.
Having recently expanded it's building, the LHS is able to take in more animals but has found itself providing housing for 100+ MORE dogs and cats than previously in it's old building. But, with that benefit comes more mouths to feed while they wait for adoption into their permanent homes. To help with that, the LHS also modified their December adoption policy. Normally they wouldn't adopt animals out at Christmastime to prevent people from hastily choosing a Christmas puppy or kitten, but while they still are being very responsible in their adoption policy, they allowed for adoptions this month. Looking at their current stats, they had no puppies available for adoption as of today. But, they still have almost 100 kitties and 50 cats looking for a new home.
The animals shelters and rescue groups have a warm and fuzzy place in my heart and home. I strongly advocate for both, having adopted all of the cats we've had in our lives from shelters. I also support our local basset hound rescue group Colorado Basset Rescue and nationally with the Daily Drool. These groups all need our support, whether it be at Christmastime or beyond. I see and read of stories in my community as well as beyond of people who can't provide for themselves, let alone their beloved family pets. I also see the need for people to turn first to their local humane society for the desire to fill their lives with the love of a new pet and NOT to pet stores like those found HERE and in most communities.
So, jump on in. We know it's cold outside..but it'll warm your soul.
Volunteers and staff from Longmont Humane Society are gearing up to leap in the icy waters of Boulder Reservoir at high noon on January 1, 2009 to help raise money for lost and homeless animals.
LHS has participated in the Polar Plunge, sponsored by the Young Professionals' Alzheimer's Association of Colorado, since 1993, raising thousands of dollars in pledges.
You can help get the animals off to a great start for 2009 - and you don't even have to test those frigid waters yourself!
Please consider making a pledge to any one of our jumpers by going to www.firstgiving.com/longmonthumane, and clicking on "View all fundraising pages" on the right side of the page. Then you need only choose the polar plunger of your choice and make a simple, secure online donation to support their frigid fundraising.
Thank you for all you have done for Longmont Humane Society in 2008 and best to you and yours in the New Year!
