Young and restless: The Strokes' Julian Casablancas

As vocalist for acclaimed New York band, The Strokes, Julian Casablancas has had a very interesting career thus far. He has collaborated with different artists, ranging from The Lonely Island to Queens of the Stone Age and his distinctive vocals (processed through effects on the first two Strokes albums) have garnered him comparisons to fellow New Yorkers, Lou Reed and Guided by Voices' Robert Pollard. This fall, Casablancas will release his first solo album, "Phrazes for the Young".

Since going on hiatus in 2007, The Strokes have been individually involved in different projects outside the band. Guitarist Albert Hammond Jr has already released two solo albums, and bassist Nikolai Fraiture released an album last year under the name Nickel Eye.  Reportedly, The Strokes have already begun to write material for what will become their fourth album. For the time being however, Casablancas is focused on his upcoming release and subsequent live shows in support of the album.

Very little has been said of "Phrazes of the Young”, other than it was produced by Jason Lader - whose previous work includes Coldplay and Justin Timberlake - and additional production was provided by Bright Eyes' Mike Mogis. No single has been released and the sample shown below is less than 2 minutes long. In spite of all this, great expectation has been placed on Casablancas' first solo outing. Being a multi-instrumentalist, it will not be surprising to learn that Casablancas performed most of the album's tracks himself.

In his first interview in years posted on his website, Casablancas was asked what his goal was in making his solo album: "I guess it was to capture the catchiness of modern music" he said, "but at the same time getting the power and seriousness of classical music or older music." Judging by the brief sample, his record could have a more keyboard-oriented sound, as opposed to The Strokes' guitar-driven style.

According to Amazon.com, “Phrazes for the Young” will be released on September 29th.
