Songwriter's Beat finds new home at Christopher Street Coffee House

New York's monthly Songwriter's Beat gathering is moving from Cornelia Street Café to Christopher Street Coffee House, a bigger venue in the heart of Greenwich Village.

"The move allows us to present outstanding performing songwriters to a larger audience in an intimate listening environment," says Songwriter's Beat founder Valerie Ghent. "It is a true joy to find a venue as passionate about performing singer-songwriters as we are and it’s a perfect space for the continued growth of The Songwriter’s Beat as we enter our second decade of supporting performing songwriters. We look forward to featuring artists and bringing new songs to life in this magnificent listening environment, a gem which has so much to offer to NYC’s live music scene.”

Located at St. John's Lutheran Church at 81 Christopher Street, The Christopher Street Coffee House is co-sponsored by St. John's and the Downtown Songwriters' Circle. It presented a "Gardens of Forgiveness" fundraising concert with Pete Seeger last month for a capacity crowd of over 300.

“Valerie’s experience and excellent musicianship makes for a wonderful partnership as we all strive to create artist-friendly spaces that support and encourage these gifted people as they pursue their passion and make their contribution to the world,” says St. John's Pastor Lyndon Harris, also co-founder of the Coffee House. The facility will now host The Songwriter's Beat on the third Thursday of every month starting Jan. 20, 2011, as well as the Songwriter's Beat 10th Anniversary Concert on Dec. 3.

"We're celebrating 10 years, 300-plus songwriters, 50 benefit concerts, six annual festivals, one song contest and hundreds of new songs!" says Ghent, herself a singer-songwriter who is also the longtime keyboardist/backup singer and recording engineer for Ashford & Simpson and founder/director of Feel the Music!, a nonprofit music/arts education program for children and families impacted by trauma, loss and illness.

Founded in 2000, The Songwriter's Beat offers singer-songwriters a venue for performing new material in an acoustic and supportive setting.
