Pretty in wink: New York's WinkSound

New York-based electro rock band, WinkSound make music that will inevitably make you want to dance. Now, whether or not you give in to the urge is your problem, but the fact remains that WinkSound will make you want to move. Their sound is a peculiar blend of electro beats with splashes of electric guitar and brilliant vocals. While it does sound accessible, it lacks the pretentiousness of modern day pop music; no easy feat.

WinkSound was founded in New York City by two audio engineers, Mateo Puig and Rick G. The pair began their website Winksound.com in 2008. Since then, it has served as an online community of music production news and video tutorials, where other producers and engineers can receive and provide insight into the world of production and audio recording.

WinkSound’s discography consists of two independently released EPs which are available for free download. Some songs have a very sexy vibe that recall the more provocative aspects of Massive Attack’s “Mezzanine”. Production-wise, the recordings have very interesting panning and effects, while the usually subtle guitar parts add a lot of texture to the musical landscape. Also, the vocals have a lot of soul and character, invoking a passion that convinces the listener of the quality of the writing. The style is quite a departure for Mateo (who handles vocals and guitars, among other things), considering that his last band, Boca had a more indie rock sound and feel.

As a result of their combined efforts as a duo, WinkSound deliver music that makes you want to shake your ass instead of bang your head, and in an ever evolving world where technology is changing constantly, it is safe to assume that they will continue to progress and explore different sonic territory – both as musicians and as engineers.
