Just four years ago, singer/songwriter Rebecca Pronsky formed the Brooklyn Songwriters Exchange with the goal to provide a creative and supporting environment for local musicians to showcase their work. The innovative program has already garnered rave reviews from Time Out New York, The Brooklyn Courier and New York Daily News.
After finding success at a slew of venues around town the Exchange set up shop at Union Hall in Park Slope. The downstairs music room provides great acoustics and a nice set-up away from the ever-popular bocce ball mania upstairs. The Brooklyn Songwriters Exchange focuses on finding the best of local talent, with the occasional out-of-towner, to fill out the bill. This month Joe Whyte, Valerie Miller (of Asheville, North Carolina) and Pronsky herself will be performing on Sunday the 16th at 7:30pm.
The Exchange is a great way to become more involved in the local music scene. It is an inviting atmosphere where music fans and local independent musicians alike can come together and be exposed to the latest in folk/pop music influenced, of course, by the Brooklyn scene.
The show is free to the public and will continue to be so throughout 2010 due to the support of the ASCAP. As such, the event is a "pass-the-hat" ordeal where tips for the performers are encouraged and appreciated.
Union Hall is located in the center of Park Slope and as such is easily accessible; the nearest trains are R, Q, N, 2, 3, 4 and 5. For easy direction tips, head to hopstop.com.
