Wendy Woo--unplugged at the D-Note

When a girl can come up onstage with a guitar and singlehandedly get the dance floor filled with people, you know she's good.

Friday night at the D-note in Olde Town Arvada, opening for Something Underground, Wendy Woo left her band at home and treated a greatly appreciative audience to a 90-minute "unplugged" set. A staple in the Denver local music scene, Woo has attracted a large following over the years with her acoustic pop/rock sound and memorable songwriting. With no band to back her up, it still was apparent what has drawn her fans. Her aggressive, high-energy playing style and powerful vocals arrested our attention from the jump, and her natural, unassuming stage presence kept us engaged.  Within a few songs the dance floor was filled with happy people, mouthing the words of her songs as she played--just as if a full band was backing her up.

Sheer talent can attract people's attention, and Wendy Woo certainly has that in spades; but to keep their attention for an hour and a half with only her own guitar to back her up--that takes a bit more. Woo plays and sings with a passion and heartfelt intensity that lets you know she loves what she does, and draws you into that passion.  Friday night at the D-note, Wendy Woo took a guitar and proved that she's not only a great musician, but a great entertainer, and a consummate professional.

Thanks for the great review. I'm a big Woo fan. I didn't make it to the show, and now I know what I missed.
