Indie-folk artist Sarah Jaffe makes a stop in Denver

Sarah Jaffe
Indie-folk singer/songwriter Sarah Jaffe.

If you are a fan of indie-folk and haven't heard of singer/songwriter Sarah Jaffe yet, you owe it to yourself to listen to her stuff.

Currently on a tour with Lou Barlow (of the bands Dinosaur Jr. and Sebadoh), and promoting her first full-length record Suburban Nature, 24-year-old Sarah Jaffe made a stop at Denver's Larimer Lounge on Friday, sharing her understated and honest songs with a new crowd. Citing such influences as Joni Mitchell, James Taylor and Cat Stevens, Jaffe draws much of her songwriting material out of the ins and outs of human relationships. Her sound is reflective and melencholy, her voice simple and memorable. Rather than carrying a distinct message in her music, Jaffe is about human connections, writing and performing with a hope that others will relate to the emotion in her songs.

Interestingly, this isn't the first connection Sarah Jaffe has made with Denver, having previously spent several weeks on a tour with Denver indie-rock band Crooked Fingers. Hailing from Denton, Texas, she has also spent time on the road with Midlake, and even Norah Jones. However, the release of Suburban Nature on Kirtland Records, and this subsequent tour, are Jaffe's first full-scale effort to reach a wider audience as a serious artist in her own right.

Larimer Lounge was not Sarah Jaffe's first appearance in Denver, and will likely not be her last. If you take a listen to Suburban Nature, chance are you will want to catch her the next time she comes to town.
