Denver singer/songwriter Gabrielle Louise is not your typical indie musician--that is, if there even is such a thing. Described mainly as a folk/roots artist with pop sensibilities and a tinge of jazz, she has a depth of songwriting that belies her youth, and with four completely-independent CDs under her belt (and preparing to record a fifth), she's already a veteran. She has vocal chops worthy of a mainstream record deal, but a sense of diversity that defies locking her into a specific genre. She's got a solid identity as an artist, yet seems to be constantly pressing her own envelopes and reinventing herself--playing solo or with a variety of band combinations, venturing from folk into jazz and even tango.
In short, Gabrielle Louise is a unique blend.
Music is definitely more than an interest to Gabrielle; it's an inherent part of her nature. Born to "gypsy musicans" (as her website bio reads), she knew by age 4 that she wanted to play music for a living. Says Gabrielle, "[My parents] were playing gigs six nights a week right up until the evening of my birth, so I suppose I was hearing all sorts of messages from the womb that said something like 'in the future you will suck at math, have ugly calloused fingers and hum incessantly.'" That troubadour spirit has carried over into both Gabrielle's chosen career and her willingness to explore diverse musical expressions.
After wintering (summering?) south of the equator in Buenos Aires, Gabrielle is back in Denver, and is performing a homecoming show at Dazzle Restaurant and Lounge this Sunday evening, April 4. She'll play mainly solo (with a couple of special guests helping out here and there), throwing in some folk, jazz and possibly even some of the music she embraced in Argentina. For her second set, Gabrielle says she will play the complete setlist for her next album, which she plans to record this month.
