Local Denver pop-rock band The Heyday, though barely in their 20s, are not novices to the Denver scene. For the past three years they've been actively playing shows here in Denver and in a number of other cities, and earning a fan base--one that voted them into Channel 93.3's Top 3 bands for Hometown for the Holidays, alongside The Epilogues and Churchill. Neither is this their first go-round with Hometown for the Holidays; this is The Heyday's second time in the Top 3. Not a bad showing for five local guys who decided to form a band right out of high school.
According to frontman Randy Ramirez, although the band's combined influences include everything from jazz to punk, they collectively aspire toward the more timeless elements of straight-up rock and roll. Their songwriting process varies from song to song, he says; but with most of their tunes, the music evolves first as a collaboration from the band, and when the music is fleshed out, Ramirez usually adds the lyric. Based on the fans' response, it seems the combination is working for them.
Of the many positive factors that have been part of The Heyday's journey, two tend to stand out. First..."I can't imagine doing anything we've done without the Internet," Ramirez says. The band has utilized the web in some way for everything from booking to promotion. The other factor is the local music community in Denver. Says Ramirez, "I think it's really supportive in Denver compared to a lot of the other cities we've seen...It's amazing that there's so much good music in Denver, but it's not competitive. I think it's really good in that sense."
The band's plans for 2010 include more touring, and returning to the studio to record a new EP. For the month of January, The Heyday is offering their current self-titled album in its entirety as a free download, to spread the word about the band and build support for the new recording when it's released. The Heyday is continuing to grow and develop, and although Ramirez says they would look at a record deal if the right one came along, they are cool with remaining indie while they build success on their own terms. They aren't in a hurry. Things are good with The Heyday, and for now, they're enjoying the ride.
