Angie Stevens & the Beautiful Wreck at Benders Tavern--concert review

Friday night, alt-country/folk band Angie Stevens & the Beautiful Wreck played to a packed house at Benders Tavern in Denver.

Although the doors were slated to open at 9PM, Stevens and crew didn't actually get started until 11:30--a combination of a late start and two  opening acts.  When Angie Stevens took the stage, however, it was apparent the wait was worth it.

Stevens, small of build but huge of voice, exudes a natural stage presence, raw energy and an infectious passion that makes her stand head and shoulders above the pack. Her songs are catchy, well-written, and well-played by a backup band with as much talent as Angie Stevens herself.

Stevens has played in much larger venues, places like Red Rocks and Coors Field; but in that intimate setting at Benders, she and the band gave a show worthy of a much larger venue and worth several times what people paid to get in--and seemed genuinely grateful to her fans for coming out, and to Benders for giving them a place to play.

Angie Stevens is doing a "Songwriter in the Round" show at Casselman's tonight (March 1), and will appear with her band at Toad Tavern on March 12, along with Megan Burtt, Goldie and the Bears and Wendy Woo.  Stevens is a strong, solid, professional performer, highly entertaining, and one to watch.  Go see her play the first chance you get.
