Kellybeth turns credit cards into one-of-a-kind jewelry

Quick, what’s the first thing that comes to mind when I say the word, “recycle”? Probably an image of unsightly plastic bins smartly separating paper from plastic and aluminum.

But ask Kelly Campbell what springs to mind at the word “recycle” and she might say, “jewelry.” In the spring of 2008 Kelly and her twin sister Katie had the notion to turn plastic credit cards and gift cards into cute earrings and bracelets. They started up Kellybeth (the name is Kelly and their mom Beth’s name combined) with the intent of creating eco-conscious fashionable accessories for stylish women everywhere.

Business is booming so that Katie and Kelly have a couple of Denver friends also cutting up credit cards and turning them into unique dangly earrings in five different styles—cubz, squarz, holz, dotz, shredz—and bracelets. The earring styles are true to their too-cute names: holz are strips of credit card pieces with holes punched in them, dotz are those punched-out holes strung together and so on.

“They are mostly one-of-a-kind pieces because it is difficult to get several of the same cards,” Kelly says. “So it is a unique item for each customer.”

Locally made Kellybeth is actually on the cutting edge of a new concept called “upcycling” where recyclable materials are fashioned into something of greater value.

“It is an easy product to buy,” says Kelly. “It doesn’t feel recycled so people in all walks of life can do their part when they buy it, even if they are not complete recyclers.”

And it helps that no one piece costs over $50 so the pieces are for every budget. Even though all of the design and manufacturing take place in Denver where Kelly and Katie live, they have quickly gained a following at boutiques across the country.

Kelly's my friend. She is amazing. I have 2 pairs of her earrings, I love to wear them with almost any outfit, and get compliments on them all the time!
