Hamburg Township clerk recalled; millages pass

Hamburg Township voters spoke loudly in Tuesday’s election, recalling the township clerk by a wide margin.

Hamburg Township Clerk Matthew Skiba was ousted in a recall effort that saw 4,227 township residents cast ballots to remove him from office versus 1,104 who voted to keep him. There were a total of 5,331 votes on the recall issue.

While Hamburg Township voters said no to the clerk, they said yes to a police millage and a parks millage. The police millage received 3,217 yes votes to 2,278 no votes, while the parks millage received 3,528 yes votes to 1,955 no votes.

The police millage will levy up to 1.5 mills over 10 years, beginning in 2009. Officials estimate the millage will generate just under $1.5 million the first year.

The .23 mills approved for the Lakeland Trail, township parks, and senior citizen-community center, will generate about $248,000 the first year.

Meantime, the results are in for city council elections across Livingston County, including the Brighton City Council race that featured six candidates for four seats.

Out of a total 3,251 votes cast, the high vote-getter was Larry Schillinger with 641. Also picking up a Brighton council seat was Ricci Bandkau with 635 votes, Shawn Pipoly with 622, and James Muzzin with 607.

Mary Ellen Hundley received 460 and Susan Walters-Steinacker had 280. There were six write-in votes cast.

Howell Mayor Geraldine Moen received 505 votes as the lone candidate for that office. There were 12 write-ins.

There were 1,543 votes cast for Howell City Council. Elected were  Scott Niblock with 447, Paul F. Rogers with 424 and Dawn Cooper with 366.
