Finding new ways to reduce or reuse waste that would otherwise end up in our quickly filling landfills is becoming a priority issue for those committed to living green. Paper has been the focus of many innovative recycling ideas in recent years and used to create everything from insulation to handbags woven from old magazines.
Now there is a slight shift to that focus. It’s not just paper, but recycled cardboard that has the interest of environmentalists: people are reusing rather than recycling and cardboard boxes and making new furniture. With a little glue, stain and a hobby knife, people are making coffee tables, shelves, chairs and more.
There are some obvious issues that can arise in the use of cardboard furniture-waterproofing and fire safety, for example. With a little care and some innovative thinking, you could negate these issues; for example, a piece of reclaimed glass or acrylic could be cut to size and placed on top for example.
This is also a good way to express your creativity and individual style in your home without the technical skill and unwieldy equipment needed to create similar pieces with wood. Remember, mistakes are not a big deal because your materials are cost effective: recyclable and easily replaced!
