First "rock" show
I am quite proud to write that my first rock show I attended was Motley Crue’s Dr. Feelgood Tour with Faster Pussycat opening up. It was rad. At one point during the concert, Tommy Lee’s drumset slowly raised to the ceiling while performing a ridiculously easy “drum solo”. The whole spectacle seriously kicked my ass. In the mid to late 80’s, I was shamelessly into hair-metal.
My second “rock” show was Poison with Warrant opening up. That one was particularly special because Green Bay Packers quarterback, Don “The Magic Man” Majkowski came up on stage and sang Every Rose Has It’s Thorn with Brett Michaels.
Favorite local band
My favorite local bands from the past are Digibot, The Super Eights and The Runners-Up. Man alive, I loved those bands. Currently, I am a huge fan of The Midwest Beat, Sleeping in the Aviary, The Low Czars, Vid Libert, El Valiente and The August Teens. Honestly, I’m still waiting for that one new band, with fresh faces, to come around and blow me the hell away. It just hasn’t happened yet.
Most recent record purchase
His and Her Vanities. Their new album rocks my world!!
Favorite gig
My favorite gig always seems to be the most recent one we’ve played. I will say that there was a Shabelles happy hour show at The High Noon a year or so ago that I got a little crazy with. No apparent reason really. There weren’t tons of people there. Nothing particular happened to me that day for me to feel one way or the other…but for some reason, while playing the show, I just got all jacked up. I remember at the end of one of the songs, sprinting around on stage and using a trumpet case to try and elevate me higher for a jump kick, but instead the trumpet case fell over while I was high up in the air and I fell backwards on my ass. It was as graceful and messy as a drunken surgeon. That was one of my favorite gigs and I don’t know exactly why.
Another memorable gig was election night ‘08. The band I played drums in, The John Ashcroft Fan Club, had a reunion show where we played all our anti-George Bush/ant-government songs (Do You Fear The Government, Destroy the Government, Burning Bush). It seemed appropriate that our very last show was playing with Digibot the night Barack Obama got elected as our 44th President.
Favorite Kinks song
Victoria, hands down.
FUN FACT: Mr. Schabow loves The CW television show “Supernatural”. The few people that know this make fun of him regularly about it.
