The lovely and talented Madeleine Peyroux
Madeleine Peyroux performs at Park West (322 W Armitage) March 14th. The combination of her Billie Holiday-esque vocals and the retro atmosphere of Park West would make this concert an excellent setting for a date (hint, hint), so if you've got someone special in mind, purchase tickets here.
You probably know this low profile jazz chanteuse for her song "Don't Wait Too Long," which was featured in a Docker's TV spot and is the only original composition on her much lauded 2004 album Careless Love. You probably don't know that aside from this one foray into commercial music, she's dodged the public eye for the romantic life of a rambling artist. After matriculating in southern California and New York City, she moved to Paris at 15 to start singing in the streets with a group called the Riverboat Shufflers. At 16, she toured Europe for two years with the Lost Wandering Blues and Jazz Band. After the release of her first album Dreamland in 1996, she spent six years quietly busking in Paris. Since 2002, she's released three solo albums as well as a popular collaboration with William Galison and won "Best International Jazz Artist" at the 2007 BBC Jazz Awards.
One other thing about Peyroux: although I enjoy her music, I think that it's especially suited to my mother, who counts Patsy Cline and Tracy Chapman among her favorite artists. Mother's Day may be months away, but I've made my mind up to purchase Careless Love on Amazon (hint, hint).
