The Donnas were in town last Thursday night at the Paradise Rock Club. The four feisty females partied with a retro sound and a mission to rock and roll. Dropping albums since 1997, their latest, Greatest Hits Vol 16, is ‘a mix of new songs, never-before-heard b-sides, live recordings as well as re-recorded classics and previously unreleased tracks”, according to the listing at Amazon.com. Situated along the front of the stage were three official fan club members. These ‘Donnaholics’ will provide the meat and potatoes of this review.
Laura had been at the NYC gig the night before, “This is my sixteenth show. I don’t know what it is and I don’t know why we keep going. They’re really cool. They are so much fun and the music is really awesome.” She pointed to a small group of folks, “He’s from Kentucky, she’s from Rhode Island and I’m from Connecticut. We all meet up and go to the shows.” She continued, “If you run into the band outside of a show, they really appreciate you being there. There aren’t many bands who are that appreciative and that approachable. We support them in everything. They could ask them for gas money and we’d give it to them. They’re really great girls and we love the band.”
Sara (she is in a band called, She Eats Planets) and had this to say, “This is only my third show. These guys are really under appreciated. They should be one of the top artists out there. They are skilled, write awesome songs and put on an amazing show! They are leagues better than the major artists these days and they don’t get the recognition they deserve.”
And finally, Tony, “I’ve been seeing the band since 2004. Honestly, they are one of the best bands running out there. They get better with every show and every album. You can tell they love of the music and the fans that come out. They talk to the fans and appreciate the fans. That’s becoming very rare nowadays.” Proving himself as a true Donnaholic, Tony listed a little tour history, “I’m from Kentucky, but I’ve been to New York a couple times, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Texas, Michigan, Atlanta, Nashville, Wisconsin, Alabama and North Carolina – but this is my first time in Boston for a Donnas show.”
