On Wednesday night, MassConcerts presented a heavy hitting dose of metal to the crowd at Great Scott on Commonwealth Avenue in Allston. The concert sold out the day of the show and featured Doomriders, Skeletonwitch, Howl and Megasus. Right in the middle of the line-up were those guys from Austin, Texas – Iron Age.
‘Everything is big in Texas’ and the hardcore sounds from this band represented that slogan to a tee. Cliches aside, Iron Age took the stage with pounding intensity, giving the crowd exactly what they wanted and challenged them to rage out. Big sound. Big energy. Iron Age’s thrash metal vibe is an assault on your senses, that even this hip-hop fan can admire and enjoy. They are a band that will bite your face off; you might even want to throw beer at yo’ mama. The rules of the metal scene are simple: Rock out. It’s about playing loud, playing angry and releasing frustration. Iron Age did just that.
Iron Age’s set peeled away the band’s musical layers. They are promoting the release of their latest LP, entitled, The Sleeping Eye, off of Tee Pee Records. The lead singer connected directly with the audience, definitely a benefit for smaller venues. At venues like Great Scott, fans can literally stand face to face with the artists they enjoy. During their 30 minute gig, Iron Age brought it down a few notches for some semi-mellow pieces, right before taking it up again and peaking, with the crowd primed and ready for some serious moshing.
The further you stood from the speakers, the more you could appreciate and hear the musical talent (and protect your face and camera from stage diving). Doomriders (who opened for Clutch at the House of Blues back in December) always performs with enthusiasm and passion. “GO FAST, PLAY LOUD,” a fitting motto for this group reppin’ Salem, MA.
Skeletonwitch played at full speed from start to finish. Favorite quote from them: “This song is about being strangled…by unseen hands.”
Doomriders, Skeletonwitch, Iron Age, Howl, Megasus will be at The Webster in Hartford, tonight (2/20). Click on the slide show below to view images and mini video clips from the Boston event.
