Alice in Chains (AIC) is on tour, bringing with them music from their fourth studio album: Black Gives Way to Blue. It has been fourteen years since their last release, and the fans from Boston packed the Orpheum Theater last Sunday night, in full support. Devil horns raised high in the air, the crowd watched a beautifully lit two hour show, in the intimate theatre setting on Hamilton Place. The diehards hung over the balcony, screaming back the lyrics, while twisted images and gritty video clips flickered on the displays over the band. New vocalist William DuVall, alongside guitarist Jerry Cantrell, bassist Mike Inez and drummer Sean Kinney performed some of their newest songs, in addition to a selection of heavy hitters from their catalog of singles from the past.
“I’m just thrilled they are back with a new singer, because I am an older fan and I didn’t get a chance to see Alice in Chains with Layne Staley,” said Linda from Medford. “I had tickets three times and three times I missed them. So, I am trilled to see them with an incredible new singer.” She added, “I was very impressed. I was NOT unimpressed. They were great.” On the way home, a large group of Greenline MBTA riders also agreed that the show was greatness and worth coming out in the monsoon for.
The guys connected directly with the crowd, with roaring solos that weren’t too loud for the mid-sized room. Frontman William DuVall worked the stage effortlessly, as if this new pairing was meant to be. The energy from the band was evident as they fed off the response from the crowd. Mike Inez, a Laker fan, gave credit to Boston Celtics legend Larry Bird, as being one of the best NBA players of all time. That earned him some extra cool points from this sports-crazy town. From beginning to end, AIC gave the ticket holders what they came for. Looking around the room, people were mouthing every lyric to every song.
