Juan Luis Guerra dabbles in merengue, bachata, salsa, and even jazz and Afro-pop/Latin fusion. But his sound, much like his voice, is unmistakably unique.
In 1987 Mientras Más Lo Pienso...Tú dropped. With it dropped a bomb on the Latin music scene, which at the time was ruled by crap like Rafael, Juan Gabriel, and the insufferable Gloria Estefan.
That bomb, known today as Juan Luis Guerra y 440, set off a ripple effect that transformed Latin music -- especially in the U.S. Guerra followed the immense success of Mientras Mas with more (and bigger) success with 1990's Ojalá Que Llueva Café and 1991's Bachata Rosa, which brought the bachata genre to an audience outside of the Dominican Republic.
More than 20 years later and with more than 20 million records in the bank, Juan Luis Guerra visits our part of the world. Again. (The man loves it here.)
