Perverts are putting out in San Francisco, for Folsom Street and beyond

CSC played host to Perverts Put Out, at 1519 Mission
The Perverts Put Out series was getting it on in full force last night in honor of today’s Folsom Street Fair. Hosted at San Francisco’s Center for Sex and Culture, a jam packed and steamy yet cozy performance space at 1519 Mission Street, the “Perverts” in attendance delivered a positively titillating lineup of poetry and fiction reading. From the obscene to the erotic to the downright playful, each speaker brought a unique and sexually charged voice to the evening’s intimate setting.

Perverts Put Out, San Francisco’s “longest running pansexual performance series,” aims to foster a sex-positive and educational atmosphere through literary expression. And yes, it can get a little kinky.

Guest emcees at last night’s edition, Lori Selke and Marlo Gayle, kicked off the event with a playful (but legitimate) debunking of Fox News’ accusation that PPO is a government funded pornographic institution, assuring the cheering audience that no taxpayer’s dollars are thrown their way. From there it was all fun, games, and a whole lot of eroticism.

The array of immensely warm and talented performers were wildly impressive and diverse in their styles and subject matter. Taking the mic were Jen Cross, Hew Wolff, Jan Steckel, Juba Kalamka, Dusty Horn, Meliza Banales, Thomas Roche, Ernesto Sarezale and horehound stillpoint. Every performance was touching – variously humorous, political, raunchy, loving, even disconcerting, but absolutely well crafted, beautifully performed, and engaging. From what we can learn about sex from how snails get it on, to tales of bondage and how to find pleasure and love just the way you want it, Perverts Put Out packed quite a punch.

PPO will be returning to its original venue on January 9th for the next edition – a post New Years hangover soiree. Look for them at 1310 Mission Street at CounterPulse, a community center, performance space, and gallery for provocative performance. But if you dare venture forth, be forewarned, it’s not for everyone. Be prepared for vulgarity, for nudity, and to be pushed outside your comfort zone; but expect in return to learn something about yourself, about the joys of unexplored sexuality, and about the most intimate sides of some incredibly talented artists.

The entire show was a force; Meliza Banales worked the stage and her piece like nothing I've ever seen before. January can't get here soon enough.
