Young teens will delight in the latest vampire saga, Soulstice: Luna’s Dream, to be released May 31. Teen vampire, Luna Tremaine, defies an age-old vampire code by falling in love with a human, Paul James. Not only does she pursue her feelings for Paul James, but she unwisely reveals too much about herself, putting her family and the entire vampire population in peril.
Early in their relationship, Luna fears that Paul James suspects that she is a vampire. After researching how to spot a vampire, Paul James spies on her family, and devises tests to determine if she is a vampire. If this weren’t enough, a gang of “Killer Bee” vampire cheerleaders have claimed Paul James as their own. Luna must protect Paul, setting off a chain of events that culminate in a vampire battle.
Luna’s Dream contains a number of similarities to the Twilight saga. Luna’s Dream is also set on the West Coast, includes werewolves, and features a Native American character as Luna’s confidant. However, there are important differences. Luna’s narrative includes extensive background on vampire culture and history.
With sometimes harsh honesty, Luna provides vivid, graphic details about the vampire lifestyle. She corrects common misconceptions concerning vampires. They don’t live forever. These vampires do not kill their prey, only feed on them. The humans are anesthetized by the venom, and do not feel pain or recall being fed upon. Despite some graphic scenes, the book is careful to portray Luna as a sympathetic character.
Soulstice: Luna’s Dream is written by Lance Dow and Keana Texeira, and is based on screenplay of the original motion picture to be released in 2011. Check out the Who’s Luna website for details on how to purchase the book.
