The cover of Cassiday's 2007 thriller
Following the Twilight trend, there are a ridiculous number of vampire stories floating around the market right now. If most of them are similar to Twilight, reading them is going to be a redundant waste of time. The vampire genre is still going strong, though, through series like the Sookie Stackhouse novels (and its accompanying show True Blood on HBO) and through stories that portray vampires in their more traditional, frightening sense.
I Kill for Your Blood is a short story available online and written by Bryan Cassiday, author of Fete of Death, a novel, and another short story called The Cheshire Cat. I Kill for Your Blood tells the story of Dirk Kovic, an ancient vampire who works for the CIA but who cannot control his lustful appetite for young women and their blood. A CIA agent named Victor Ward has discovered Kovic’s unusual habit of draining women and then staking them, leaving their bodies to be found later.
Kovic does not regard himself as evil, since he’s dead; he uses a good dash of quasi-philosophical reasoning to justify his actions, quoting, among others, Nietzsche. In addition, he has attacked the shy Ward’s girlfriend, Rita. When Ward gets word from up above to “take care” of Kovic, who is thought to be insane and not recognized for the undead creature he truly is, Ward relishes the opportunity to defend her.
Although the story is short and the main characters aren’t given enough room to become fully developed, the writing bounces nicely along and readers will be eager to find out what happens to this ill-fated trio. Given more room to breathe and expand, I Kill for Your Blood could become quite an interesting little thriller, and it’s definitely worth checking out.

What? Twilight was about vampires? That's not what I gathered at all...I thought they were just called that, because they most definitely do NOT follow the traits of vampires.
Now, on the topic of these short stories...I am intrigued by the idea, hopefully this will be a modern tale that is actually about vampires. *crosses fingers*
