On August 28, 2010 at The Layover in Oakland, Lauren Becker hosted an edition of East Bay On The Brain when everything went just right. The stars were smiling and the magic came true.
Let’s face it. A lot of readings (not YOURS, dear reader, never YOURS) can be, well, boring and irritating. We go again and again, enduring hot rooms, long-winded poets, endless introductions, uneven performances, social-climbing hipsters, overpriced drinks, sexual rejection and lord knows what else. And why? Because sometimes, as we all know, a miracle happens. Literature happens. The real thing. Communication that hits you in the gut. Thoughts so sparkling we drink them in like the best champagne. It is enough to lift us out of all the crap and remind us how wonderful it is to be here, together, alive, conscious, and loving one another. It goes down like that often enough to keep us coming back with our hope renewed. And renewing hope, well, that’s not a bad mission. Is it?
At the latest edition of EBOB, hope and literature kicked back their heels and danced a jig.
Above all: the readers. Here is the honor list (alphabetically): Lauren Becker, Joe Clifford, Timothy Crandle, Amy Glasenapp, Mindela Ruby, Maw Shein Win, and Jezebel Delilah X. Since first attending spoken word performances and readings in the Bay area, I have not seen a more impressive lineup.
It is tempting to try and describe each story and poem, but I will let the videos speak for themselves. Do look and listen! This work is exceptional.
Congratulations to Lauren Becker and Paul Corman-Roberts as they develop EBOB into a premier reading event. Keep up the good work! We’ll be back to applaud. — Charles Kruger
