Recently, Charles ventured into the East Bay to attend the East Bay Poetry Express at Priya restaurant in Berkeley. Indian food + poetry = all sorts of satisfaction.
Host Mark States has been active in the poetry world since the eary 1990s. Poetry Express celebrated its 8th anniversary in April 2010. It is a weekly series, occurring every Monday except for major holidays, with open mic and a featured reader. Once a month there is an all open-mic night with a pre-announced theme.
East Bay Poetry Express is unusual in its diversity, with some readers well past 70, a striking mix of ethnicities, and an audience known for its welcoming acceptance of all gender variations. Some regular attendees have been involved in the Bay area poetry scene for 20 plus years.
Kudos to featured reader Daniel Yaryan who maintained his professional demeanor and dignity in the face of a loud fracas outside the restaurant, impressively framed in the picture window behind him. He confidently restarted his performance once the commotion had died down, and we are delighted to have a fine video to share with you.
