'X-Men: Days of Future Past' soars to first place this holiday weekend

The newest "X-Men" film "X-Men: Days of Future Past" took top position at the box office this Memorial Day weekend. The film earned $111 million and is the fifth largest grossing film to open during Memorial Day weekend. The top grossing film for Memorial Day weekend is "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End," which grossed a domestic total of $140 million in 2007.

In domestic markets "X-Men: Days of Future Past" suffered from the filmgoers that still had not seen "Godzilla," as the monster flick took a nice bite out of domestic receipts earning over $30 million. But, "X-Men: Days of Future Past" had explosive oversees sales globally, earning $171.1 million in overseas markets and a grand total of $302 million worldwide. This is the biggest Memorial Day weekend for Fox, even overtaking "Avatar" in 2009.

As "X-Men: Days of Future Past" took top spot at the box office this weekend, "Godzilla" dropped from first to second place. The film earned an additional $39.4 million. The new comedy "Blended," starring Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler, debuted in third place. It earned a disappointing $18.2 million. Obviously, Warner Bros. would have liked higher numbers, since the film's budget was $40 million. The raunchy comedy "Neighbors" dropped from second to fourth place, garnering an additional $17.2 million. This comedy has done exceedingly well, earning a domestic total of $116.9 million. "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" rounds out the top five, making an additional $10 million during its fourth week in theaters.

Making their way into movie theaters next weekend are five films that will endeavor to end "X-Men's" reign at first place are: Angelina Jolie's turn as the evil queen in "Maleficent," Seth MacFarlane's comic western "A Million Ways to Die in the West," the drama starring Jesse Eisenberg and Elle Fanning "Night Moves," the crime drama starring James McAvoy "Filth" and the war documentary "Korengal."

'X-Men: Days of Future Past'

The superhero film "X-Men: Days of Future Past" debuted in first place during this holiday weekend earning a domestic total of $111 million. The film is the fifth highest grossing movie during Memorial Day weekend.

In "X-Men: Days of Future Past," the X-Men group fight a war over two time periods teaming up with their younger selves from the "X-Men: First Class" to bring about a change in history that will save the future. "X-Men: Days of Future Past" stars Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman and Jennifer Lawrence.

"X-Men: Days of Future Past" is rated PG- 13 for sequences of intense sci-fi violence and action, some suggestive material, nudity and language and has a run-time of two hours and 11 minutes.

'Godzilla'

'Godzilla'

The monster thriller "Godzilla" dropped from first to second place at the box office during its second week in theaters. The film earned an additional $39.4 million and has garnered a domestic total of $156.8 million. "Godzilla" stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen and Bryan Cranston.

"Godzilla" is the retelling of the Japanese films from the 1950's. The film was directed by Gareth Edwards ("Monsters") and stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen and "Breaking Bad's" Bryan Cranston.

"Godzilla" is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of destruction, mayhem and creature violence and has a run-time of two hours and three minutes. 

'Blended'

'Blended'

The family comedy "Blended" debuted in fourth place at the box office this weekend. The film earned $18.2 million in the U.S. and Canada.

In "Blended," Lauren and Jim agree to never see each other again due to a horrible blind date they had with each other. But the two must learn to compromise when they find each other on an African safari with their respective children and they are made to share a suit with each other during the trip. The film stars Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore and Wendi McLendon-Covey.

"Blended" is rated PG-13 for crude and sexual content, and language and has a run-time of one hour and 57 minutes.

'Neighbors'

'Neighbors'

The frat house vs. suburbia comedy "Neighbors" dropped from second to fourth place at the box office this weekend. The film earned an additional $17.2 million and has garnered a total of $116.9 million in the U.S. and Canada.

In "Neighbors," a film by Nick Stoller ("Forgetting Sarah Marshall," "Get Him to the Greek") A young couple (Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne) are forced to move into a home near a fraternity house. Let the neighborly battles begin! "Neighbors" also stars Zac Efron

"Neighbors" is rated R for pervasive language, strong crude and sexual content, graphic nudity, and drug use throughout and has a run-time of one hour and 36 minutes.

'The Amazing Spider-Man 2'

'The Amazing Spider-Man 2'

"The Amazing Spider-Man 2" dropped from third to fifth place at the box office this weekend. The film earned an additional $10 million during its third weekend in theaters in domestic receipts. The film has earned a total of $187.1 million in the U.S. and Canada.

In "The Amazing Spider-Man 2,"  Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) runs the gauntlet as the mysterious company Oscorp sends up a slew of supervillains against him, impacting on his life. The film also stars Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx and Sally Field.

"The Amazing Spider-Man 2" is rated PG-13 for sequences of sci-fi action/violence and has a run-time of two hours and 22 minutes.

'Million Dollar Arm'

'Million Dollar Arm'

Disney's "Million Dollar Arm," dropped from fourth to sixth place during its second week in theaters at the box office this weekend. The film earned an additional $8.7 million and has grossed a total of $22.2 million in the U.S. and Canada.

In "Million Dollar Arm," a sports agent recruits cricket players from India to vie in major league baseball. The film stars "Mad Men's" Jon Hamm and Aasif Mandvi and Alan Arkin.

"Million Dollar Arm" is rated PG for mild language and some suggestive content and has a run-time of two hours and four minutes.

'The Other Woman'

'The Other Woman'

Twentieth Century Fox' female friendly film "The Other Woman" dropped from fifth to seventh place at the box office during its fifth week in theaters. The film earned an additional $4.5 million. The film has earned a domestic total of $78.4 million since its release.

In "The Other Woman," after discovering her boyfriend is married, Carly (Cameron Diaz) soon meets the wife (Leslie Mann) he's been cheating on. And when yet another affair is discovered, all three women team up to plot mutual revenge on the three-timing SOB. The film was directed by Nick Cassavetes and stars Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann and Kate Upton.

"The Other Woman" is rated PG-13 on appeal for mature thematic material, sexual references and language and has a run-time of one hour and 49 minutes.

'Rio 2'

'Rio 2'

The children's animated feature "Rio 2" dropped from seventh to eighth place this weekend, earning an additional $3.2 million. The film has grossed a domestic total of $122.3 million since its release six weeks ago.

In "Rio 2," it's a jungle out there for Blu (Jesse Eisenberg), Jewel (Anne Hathaway) and their three kids after they're hurtled Rio de Janeiro to the wilds of the Amazon. As Blu tries to fit in, he goes beak-to-beak with the vengeful (Nigel Jemaine Clement), and meets the most fearsome adversary of all: his father-in-law. The film was directed by Carlos Saldanha and stars Jesse Eisenberg, Anne Hathaway and Jemaine Clement.

"Rio 2" is rated G and has a run-time of one hour and 41 minutes.

'Chef'

'Chef'

The Jon Favreau comedy "Chef" rose from 15th to ninth place at the box office during its third week in theaters. The film earned $2.9 million over the holiday weekend and $4.2 since its release three weeks ago.

In "Chef," a chef finds new creative promise when he starts a new business in a food truck after he has been fired from his job and lost his estranged family. Will this new venture bring him happiness in both career and family life? "Chef" was written and directed by Jon Favreau. The film also stars Favreau along with Sofía Vergara, Robert Downey Jr. and Scarlett Johansson.

"Chef" is rated R for language, including some suggestive references and has a run-time of one hour and 55 minutes.

'Heaven Is for Real'

'Heaven Is for Real'

The faith based film "Heaven Is for Real" dropped from sixth to tenth place earning an additional $2.8 million and has garnered a domestic total of $86.6 million since its release into theaters six weeks ago.

In "Heaven Is for Real," a small-town father (Greg Kinnear) must find the courage and conviction to share his son's (Connor Corum) extraordinary, life-changing experience with the world. The film is based on the book by Todd Burpo and was directed by Randall Wallace. "Heaven Is for Real" stars Greg Kinnear, Kelly Reilly and Thomas Haden Church.

"Heaven Is for Real" is rated PG thematic material including some medical situations and has a run-time of one hour and 39 minutes.blaw
