There are a lot of ways to say you got jobbed and the way VCU was dealt with in the 2013 NCAA basketball tournament was unfair: the seeding may have been innocently conceived but it looks bad from the VCU fans perspective. VCU was very good last year and were ranked in the top 20 in the national polls or were leaning against the top 20 most of the year. They led D1 in steals and had a tough single-digit loss to Duke in the regular season.
It must have seemed unfair to have to go The Palace at Auburn Hills to play the number four ranked University of Michigan. On a more neutral court the Wolverines could have been dealt with. The site location essentially was a home game in Detroit for the Wolverines and a 1000+ mile odyssey for VCU. When I saw the brackets I knew that almost nobody--maybe not even Kentucky-- could come into a Detroit suburb and beat this talented Michigan team: and no one did.
Michigan led by 15 points at half time and won by 25, 78-53. Michigan's starting five played all but 14 minutes in the game and scored all but three of their points. Michigan shot 50.1% for the game compared to VCU who shot just under 40%.
Here are some photos from that UM blowout victory that looked fait accompli though I hoped for the best.
