For many students in San Jose, today is the first day of the 2013-2014 school year. And to help kids stay excited and energized throughout the school day, they need fun and healthful snacks and lunches.

Though there are some great hot lunch programs and cafeteria items, it is important for growing children to receive nourishment from a home-packed lunch.

San Jose Unified School District has its own guidelines for wellness, but ultimately, parents are responsible for helping their children make good choices when it comes to food.

First Lady Michelle Obama has been urging the entire nation to better educate families about proper nutrition and health, using the Let's Move! campaign. And celebrity chef Jamie Oliver has been a huge proponent for making changes to school lunches through his Food Revolution.
