(Article may include SPOILERS from the Superior Spider-Man)
In the What's Next? series of articles, we'll be looking at what readers can expect to see next from their favorite books after a major story arc has concluded. This week, we look at the return of the Amazing Spider-Man! The Amazing Spider-Man is swinging back into the Marvel universe in a re-launched brand new #1 issue April 30, 2014. After losing the battle over his body to longtime nemesis Doctor Octopus, Peter Parker had all but vanished from the Marvel universe. Writer Dan Slott’s Superior Spider-Man replaced the Amazing Spider-Man as the hero under the cowl, until the events of Goblin Nation forced Otto Octavius to reconsider what it takes to be a hero. As a result, the original Spider-Man has returned to his body and will be re-starring in his own series once again. But with all the company-wide crossover events that transpired and the consequences of actions committed by the Superior Spider-Man, what can readers expect from the return of the original web-head?
The epilogue story of Superior Spider-Man (issue 31) already began to establish the new status quo for Peter Parker as he begins his life anew. Titled “Actions Have Consequences,” the bonus chapter shows both of Peter’s confidants, Carlie Cooper and Mary Jane Watson, resolve to distance themselves from him. No matter how hard Spider-Man tries to protect his loved ones, he always ends up endangering them.
This isn’t the first time Spider-fans have seen Mary Jane pull herself out of Peter’s life. The married couple had their vows stripped during the controversial One More Day storyline. Mary Jane never married Peter due to his web-slinging dual life. Over the last couple of years, Marvel has teased a reunion between the two. It isn’t going to happen anytime soon. Peter Parker’s life has essentially reverted to his teenage years during the Stan Lee/Ditko era in which he was an unlucky isolated castoff all alone in the world.
Anna Maria and the Black Cat
Keep an eye out for Anna Maria, Otto Octavius’ girlfriend while in Peter’s body. While Doctor Octopus truly loved and cared for her, she was unaware of his existence in Peter’s body. For all she knows, she fell in love with Peter Parker. Will the original Peter Parker form a new bond with her now that he is all alone in the world?
Also, anybody miss the Black Cat? She surely will have some words for the Amazing Spider-Man whenever she returns to the series after loosing a tooth thanks to Otto.
For decades, the Amazing Spider-Man had operated solo. He was a lone wolf who was type casted as a menace by former publisher and mayor J. Jonah Jameson. That changed in recent years when Brian Michael Bendis gave Spider-Man membership into the New Avengers. He also joined the Future Foundation after teaming up for years with the Fantastic Four. Seemingly incorporated with the world’s mightiest heroes, the Amazing Spider-Man began to be portrayed as a hero to the public. That all changed with the Superior Spider-Man. He's no longer an Avenger, nor is he seen as a hero to the general public. It’ll be interesting to see how long Dan Slott and Marvel keep Spider-Man in this state before re-introducing him to other Marvel team books.
With the events of the Superior Spider-Man series, Peter finds himself a menace and outcasted once again. No longer is he an Avenger. No longer can he be a naive idealistic hero. After all, he killed a villain with his own hands. While he wasn’t in control of his own body, Peter Parker’s Spider-Man will still have to live with the consequences of his actions forever. How will he carry on his legacy knowing the Spider-Man name has blood tainted on it? It'll be interesting to see when Uncle Ben will make another appearance to reassure Peter of his heroic qualities.
The Superior Spider-Man
Like it or not, Peter's Spider-Man needs to realize that many of the things Otto did to utilize his spider-powers were effective and beneficial to protecting the city. One of the first technological add-ons the Superior Spider-Man added to his costume was a heads up display tracker inside his cowl. This allowed him to track many different forms of signatures, making it easier to discover criminals or people in need of help. Another upgrade was the web fluid Otto developed. The improved formula kept webs from disintegrating until the Superior Spider-Man decided it was time to dissolve it. With Otto leaving behind all his technological developments and a PhD, it’ll be interesting to see if Slott allows Peter to keep any of the Superior Spider-Man’s former toys. We know he’ll go back to the original blue and red Amazing Spider-Man costume, but let the poor guy keep some cool toys Marvel! After everything he’s been through the last year, he’ll need it.
