For numerous complex reasons, we cared for the beagle family that we fostered through Chicagoland Dog Rescue somewhat longer than we expected. But even with the ...
- fleas (one pill to mom, wash bedding, no big deal),
- intestinal worms (OK, 2 rounds of meds before they cleared, but in-home quarantine of Mama Pearl and family kept our shiba inu worm-free) and
- mange (going into winter, we all felt itchy just thinking about it but no one else got it—again, good quarantine and handwashing),
... we still loved the whole beagle-ish crew. In fact, we kept the little beagle girl, Perdita.

![Pearl (shown here doing her "I'm a downtrodden house-elf" imitation) almost went to a family with two other beagles, but that family found another beagle that seemed like a better fit for the existing beagles in the household. So she went instead to a home where she could be an only dog. Alas, her needy sticking-close-all-the-time misled her new owner into disregarding the explicit warnings that Pearl had run before and would run again, given a chance. Most fortunately, Pearl got bogged down in a snowbank running from some good Samaritans so she could be recaptured.
