The list of candidates for the head coaching job at the University of Southern California (USC) Trojans is becoming clearer as it whittles itself down. There’s a wide variety and most of the names you have already heard of.
I can tell you right now both Jack Del Rio and Jon Gruden won’t fit on this list. Del Rio was the fashionable choice because he’s a USC alumnus; but right now, he's the defensive coordinator in the NFL for the high-flying Peyton Manning led Denver Broncos of the National Football League. Gruden’s name has been bouncing around a lot lately and since the former NFL head coach is an announcer, he could be hired at any time.
However, neither will be coaching the USC Trojans in 2014. Del Rio says he can’t entertain any offers until the end of the NFL season. Also, he’s a defensive coach and I would think USC doesn’t want to get rid of Clancy Pendergast who in his first year as the defensive coordinator for the Trojans has transformed the unit into one of the elite defenses in the country. Plus, Del Rio isn’t exactly setting the world on fire with his Broncos defense which ranks in the bottom 10 in allowing points. Gruden has essentially said he wouldn’t take another job unless it was in the NFL. Some alumni want Gruden but it isn’t going to happen.
Nevertheless, there are five men who are likely on the short list for USC Athletic Director Pat Haden and his search team. Take a look at whom those five are (listed alphabetically).
