Trayvon Martin’s family settles lawsuit with homeowners association policy

The family of Trayvon Martin has settled with the homeowners association insurance policy where the teen died on one of their subdivisions, reported the Orlando Sentinel on April 5. The estimated one million dollar settlement closes the lawsuit made by the family when they claimed a wrongful-death suit against the Sanford subdivision where their son was found shot to death.

The 17-year-old teen – wearing a hoodie that later sparked nationwide Peace for Justice rallies for the family of the slain youth – was found dead by a gunshot wound on property at the Twin Lakes townhomes located in Sanford, Fla. the evening of Feb.26, 2012.

Investigators arrested George Zimmerman, a self-appointed Neighborhood Watch volunteer, for allegedly shooting the teen to his death after contacting local police that the teen was acting suspiciously; Martin was on his way carrying a snack and a drink to visit his father’s family and step brother that evening.

Zimmerman claims self-defense, that the teen attacked him first before he used the gun despite 911 tapes revealing an operator advising the crime watcher to not pursue the black youth that night.

According to reports, the homeowner’s association agreement settlement states that this is not an admission of liability or wrong doing of any kind; it’s just a business decision that will close the chapter of wrongful-death, pain and suffering, loss of future earnings and expenses claims to the parents for their son’s untimely loss where the teen was found on their property.

Trayvon Martin’s parents, Sabrina Fulton and Tracy Martin have agreed to settle for the full one million dollar policy, the cap the homeowners association carries for their Twin Lakes subdivision.

The suit against George Zimmerman, the confessed shooter who shot Trayvon Martin to his death, is still ongoing.
