One thing is certain; director J.J. Abrams knows how to make suspenseful science fiction dramas.  He is the creative genius behind the ‘Lost’ television series and the film ‘Super 8.’  I’m looking forward to seeing where he takes the Star Trek franchise. Recently, it has been announced that he will direct the new Star Wars movie too.The latest Marvel installment looks dark.  Tony Stark gets owned by the deadly foe Mandarin played by Ben Kingsley.  It will be fun to see Stark find the strength from within to come back from rock bottom.  Director Shane Black is a pioneer in action-genre screenwriting and is reunited with Robert Downey Jr. since their last film collaboration, ‘Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang.’ This science fiction film is based on the Radical Comics graphic novel penned by the director Joseph Kosinski himself.The movie trailer for it looks promising. Cruise is sent to a distant planet to destroy the remains of an alien race.The arrival of an unexpected traveler causes him to question what he knows about the planet, the mission, and himself.View the list »

With the Oscars a distant memory and spring just around the corner, it is never too early to discuss the highly-anticipated summer blockbuster movie season. Hollywood is also under the impression that summer begins in April therefore a Tom Cruise sci-fi thriller is included in the mix. I review several indie and foreign films throughout the year but during the summer months, it’s fun to catch a good popcorn movie. You know the kind. It’s a summer action flick that is guaranteed not to win any awards but they have plenty of explosions and CGI special effects. It’s reminiscent of a thrill ride at a local amusement park. So fasten your seatbelts and let’s check out the top ten blockbuster movies of 2013.

  • Fast 5 turned out to be a heist movie and breathed new life into this highly successful franchise.  Moving away from underground car-racing, the latest installment directed by Justin Lin involves a story of redemption.  After becoming wealthy from a heist, they are offered a chance to bring down a rival gang, clear their records and return home
  • Hopes are high for this Superman reboot.  Christopher Nolan is involved with the project.  Director Zack Snyder has assembled an all-star cast including Amy Adams as Lois Lane and Michael Shannon as supervillain General Zod. This DC comic book movie has huge potential to do well at the summer box office.
  • Ready or not, the Zombies are coming to a cineplex near you.  It is based on a 2006 post-apocalyptic horror novel by Max Brooks. It is directed by Marc Forster.  Brad Pitt will try to save the world from a deadly Zombie pandemic.  Pitt has the star power but will moviegoers invade theatres for another zombie flick this summer?
  • This science fiction thriller teams up father and son (Will and Jaden Smith).  It’s been a while since director M. Night Shyamalan has had a hit.  Two of his best films were ‘The Sixth Sense’ and ‘Signs.’  This is the first time he hasn’t written the screenplay and was hired to just focus on directing.  Stephen Gaghan wrote and won a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for Steven Soderbergh’s ‘Traffic.’  The film has all the elements to succeed and is one to watch this summer.
  • ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ was awful.  Hugh Jackman is back to reprise the Marvel character.  It is directed by James Mangold.  The plot sounds promising.  Wolverine travels to Japan to train with a samurai warrior.  Jackman was terrific in ‘Les Miserables’ so let’s give him the benefit of the doubt.
  • Depp teams up once again with ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ director Gore Verbinski for this Disney Western.  Depp’s global star power should bring audiences to the theatre. Plus, he looks incredible as Tonto in full war paint.  Who plays The Lone Ranger?  It doesn’t matter.  This is Depp’s rodeo.
  • It is directed by the talented Guillermo del Toro. The movie trailers look amazing for this one.  Check it out.  It’s about an alien attack of Godzilla-like creatures that threatens Earth so giant Transformer-like robots piloted by humans are deployed to save the day.  I can’t wait to see it.
