Top five obscure horror movies

The horror genre seems to have given way to ratings more than being scary with many coveting the PG-13 rating instead of of the R rating that would give filmmakers more leeway to produce a truly horrifying film. While many horror films of today rely more heavily on suspense the movies of yesteryear relied on a good old fashioned scare the pants off of you approach without regard to the MPAA rating.

Some of the movies on this list have had remakes that are as good as the original but to understand the remake you should really see the first take if for no other reason than to see how the film has progressed without bastardizing the feel of the original movie.

A good horror film must have the element of realism, surprise, the ability to delve into the psyche of the viewer and still be able to make you have an uncomfortable night of sleep. The following movies are mostly cult classics but still very much real and very true to the horror genre.
