The 2016 presidential race promises to be one of the most exciting in a general because there is no incumbent president running, which means both major parties will have open primaries with several candidates seeking each party nomination. Both parties have a number of senator and members of Congress and governors who could be possible presidential candidates in 2016.
It should be remembered that there are many months, including the 2014 Congressional and Senate mid-term elections as well, before the candidates officially begin to campaign for the 2016 presidential race. That leaves a lot of time for a lot of things to change, and candidates to get in or get out or possibly many aspects of this political picture to change.
This list is the first tier, as of now, of the Republican candidates, or likely GOP candidates, for 2016. The GOP is divided between the more conservative faction that is likely to support Ted Cruz or Rand Paul, versus the more moderate, and establishment-backed, faction of the party that will likely support Chris Christie or possibly former Florida Governor Jeb Bush. Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal and Florida Senator Marco Rubio are two other candidates who could get support from some conservatives in the GOP.
