Every election cycle for president includes the front-running candidates, often as anointed to such status by media and party activists, as well as the more “long shot” dark horse candidates for president. While many had not heard of the late Senator Paul Tsongas from Massachusetts in 1992, he won the New Hampshire primary and became prominent challenger to Bill Clinton for the Democratic nomination. Barack Obama himself was very much considered a dark horse candidate when he first announced in 2007. This list includes five possible dark horse candidates for the Democrat nomination in 2016.
The 2016 presidential race promises to be one of the most exciting in a general because there is no incumbent president running, which means both major parties will have open primaries with several candidates seeking each party nomination. Both parties have a number of senator and members of Congress and governors who could be possible presidential candidates in 2016.
It should be remembered that there are many months, including the 2014 Congressional and Senate mid-term elections as well, before the candidates officially begin to campaign for the 2016 presidential race. That leaves a lot of time for a lot of things to change, and candidates to get in or get out or possibly many aspects of this political picture to change.
