Matt's SympathyThe one person who does seem to buy into Elena (Nina Dobrev)'s theories is Matt (Zach Roerig), who's had his own experiences dealing with the loss of a sibling. In a grand display of friendship - the two have certainly come a long way since those Season 1 angry stares - he takes her out to a place that he found after losing Vicki. "This town, this crazy world we live in. Some times not being willing to accept that someone's gone is maybe they're not. At least not completely," he tells her.When she asks what he'd say if she compelled him, he answers, "I would tell you that it's okay to have hope."Coming to TermsElena (Nina Dobrev) is having a really hard time coming to terms with the fact that Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) is now a thing of the past. Since he was a supernatural being, that protection ring doesn't quite work anymore.Even as his body starts to decay and Dr. Fell (Torrey Devitto) comes to collect it, she's totally in denial. In a superbly telling moment, she explains that maybe, just maybe since Jer'd completed his hunter mark purpose, he went from being a supernatural member of the Five to a regular, everyday human again just like that. Everyone else plays along for whatever reason, despite the increasingly bad stench in the house.Shane is CraySo, basically, Shane is able to make Bonnie (Kat Graham) his powerful puppet after Jeremy (Steven R. Turns out, little brother Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) really is a goner, and while Bonnie (Kat Graham) might be able to save him by opening up the supernatural floodgates to the "other side," is it really worth all that trouble? After all, there are some pretty ticked off dead vampires and such just waiting for the chance to exact a little vengeance. Not to mention, Mystic Falls is already pretty crowded with non-humans these days, right?

These are the questions Elena has to deal with during the episode - if she can ever get past the stage of complete denial, that is.

Damon (Ian Somerhalder), Stefan (Paul Wesley), Caroline (Candice Accola) and Matt (Zach Roerig) are all on hand for the show to aid in dealing with Elena's loss, while Rebekah (Claire Holt) continues to search the island for that blimey cure and Vaughn (Charlie Bewley) stays elusive and Irish as ever.

  • Shane is CraySo, basically, Shane is able to make Bonnie (Kat Graham) his powerful puppet after Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) proves to be, in fact, dead as a door nail.   • Bonnie's Off the RockerEven though Shane was able to convince Bonnie (Kat Graham) to get on board with his let's unlock the entire other side plan of action, her pals are less convinced.While Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) deal with the matter of Elena (Nina Dobrev)'s slipping sense of reality, inside she deals with the same issue with Bonnie.When Bonnie gets home, she finds Shane waiting for her and finally brings up the big question mark about this whole sacrifice thing - what'll happen to the non-supernatural people involved? Oh, they're a necessary sacrifice, he says.But wait. Rebekah (Claire Holt) just stumbled across a bloodied body, and it looks like Shane. And it sounds like Shane ... So, it is Shane. Only, there are two of them. "Silas," he breathes. Yep, another body-snatcher-esque doppelganger-ish look-alike is in town, folks!
  • Elena's BreakdownAs Bonnie lays out her plan to re-awaken every supernatural creature ever from the other side, Elena (Nina Dobrev) starts to experience some sort of reality check interrupted only by the phone ringing. It's April on the line for Jeremy, but he's not available."Jeremy can't come to the phone right now. He's not ... I'm sorry. He's dead," she says, seeming to understand the truth of that statement once and for all.She runs upstairs to find that she's let his body decay for all this time and starts losing her cool."He's dead and he's been dead this entire time and I can smell him. How long has he smelled like that?" she screeches. Damon tries to talk her down, but she won't be calmed. No, not today.This is the most colossal freakout we've seen from her yet.Also, this was probably a one-take deal for Nina Dobrev, who did it masterfully. 
  • Caroline's Looney TooCaroline (Candice Accola) makes pity faces at Elena (Nina Dobrev) all day through this Jeremy is dead business, but she too appears to be experiencing a bad case of denial.Sure, Klaus agreed to give Tyler a head start, but the world's most powerful - at least, before Silas came along - creature aims to make him dead, and he won't pick up his phone. The math is pretty simple, but like Elena she holds out hope. Oh, and Tyler's voicemail box never gets full, apparently.
  • It's Almost Like They're Brothers Or SomethingThings have been less than ideal between Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Stefan (Paul Wesley) lately.Elena (Nina Dobrev) originally chose to be with Stefan, and then she turned all vampy and started craving her some Damon action. And then it came to light that he's got her in some kinda sire bond, which made Stefan especially angry. Oh, and they also went all the way, which he found to be totally not cool.But all this searching for the cure business has brought them together again, and Stefan makes up with Damon in his way."Listen Damon, I know that you and I have been through some bad spots lately, especially when it comes to her ... I just want you to know that ... Uh ..." To be fair, "it's okay that you stole my girl, took away her humanity and took her to bed multiple times" is hard to say, and Damon gets it anyway.Salvatore Brothers are back in action again! Which is quick, considering their spat over Katherine lasted the better part of a century.
  • Burnin' Down the HouseDamon (Ian Somerhalder) finally gets Elena (Nina Dobrev) to settle down by telling her to turn off her humanity for a bit. Stefan (Paul Wesley) doesn't like it, but he argues it's the only way she'll survive yet another loss.While she was flipping out, she came up with the idea of setting the house on fire to cover up for the decayed body of Jeremy, and when she's lost all sense of humanity, she's even more want to see the place in ashes.So, she drops the match and lets it happen, and the three of them traipse out into a new unknown. Even that wispy diary burns. So much for the old Elena, cure be darned.
