Top 5 Valentine’s Day dining choices for Galveston Island

Bernardo’s restaurant of Hotel Galvez is now taking reservations for Valentine’s Day. This is for the upscale dining crowd, as it is $75.00 per person, which thankfully, comes with a bottle of champagne per couple. Reservations are strongly suggested, seating times are between 5 pm, and 11 pm.  This will be a lovely four-course meal with choices such as ‘Baby Red Oak and Frise Crab Salad” which is tender greens with smoked Fontina, lump crab, pineapple cilantro vinaigrette, topped with toasted pine nuts; “Cilantro and Herb Salad”; Slow Braised Veal “Osso Bucco”; and Seafood Cioppino.  Located at the Historic Hotel Galvez on the Sea Wall, take a romantic night stroll down the beach to let your meal and champagne settle.Luigi’s is now taking reservations for St. Valentine’s Day, with a special menu that you can easily view online.  On this menu there are starter’s such as Cozze, which is steamed mussel with your choice of marinara sauce or white wine garlic sauce, or you can try the Pomodoro Caprese. For a main course the Lasagna Frutti di Mare sounds wonderful. Layers of fresh pasta with seafood, ricotta, mozzarella, parmesan cheese and béchamel sauce make up this delectable dish. Located on the Strand, it is in the Hutching’s and Sealy building, built in 1895, a great storm survivor with wonderful architecture and ambiance.I have heard that the Sky Bar will also have a special Valentine’s Day menu, and it will be one of the most desired spots on the Island, so make sure to see if reservations are still available. Also located on Postoffice, next to their sister restaurant the Gumbo Bar, Sky Bar Steak and Sushi has a great selection of Asian steam kettle soups, the traditional Gulf Coast Cajun style kettle selections, but uniquely fused with Asian cuisine. Their “soon to be famous” Asian gumbo is a curry-based Asian gumbo, served with steamed rice and your choice of seafood or chicken.  If you would like a romantic option, perhaps you should order the "Love" specialty roll, which is crunchy snow crab with freshwater eel and avocado topped with eel sauce.  Check out their happy Hour martini and sushi specials M-F from 5 to 7 PM, or Saturday, 10 PM to 12 AM.View the list »
The Saltwater Grill is a great Valentine’s Day choice, and I’ve been told by a manager from another Galveston Restaurant Group restaurant that they will have a special Valentine’s Day menu. Make sure to reserve your table, by following this link to Saltwater Grill. They are located on Postoffice St. across from the Opera House, in the center of the Historic and the Entertainment districts. They have a full bar and boast of having the finest, yet most affordable wine list on the Gulf Coast. The prices vary from very affordable to upscale dining, so if you’re on a tight budget, you can split a starter and then something from the kettle, if you have a little room in your stomach and budget, try their USDA prime NY strip steak, the brown butter risotto with lobster, or the sweet potato crusted catfish served with spinach and Andouille cream.

Now that Mardi Gras has come and gone, this island is enjoying a quiet off-season until Spring Break abruptly awakes locals to the realization that tourists will continue to come and go, leaving hurricanes of joy, profit, and sometimes annoying tracks of disrespectful messes in their wake. But do not let this fool you, the food scene is booming, giving Houston a little competition, and rightfully so, the island has been here longer and endured far more trials and shared in far more cultural heritages which has produced eclectic personalities and palates!

  • Rudy & Paco Restaurant and Bar has a special Valentine’s menu, and reservations are strongly recommended. Great food with South and Central American roots, Rudy and Paco is a perfect choice for a high-end, 5-star Valentine’s Meal.  At $100.00 per person, not including alcohol, tax, or gratuity, it’s very pricy, and it also says “no splits” so be prepared to spend freely if you want to take your guy or gal to this Postoffice St. restaurant.  It is next door to the Opera House.  Shrimp and Crab Campechana or Mini Beef Wellington are appetizer options, the most intriguing sounding Entrée is the Pan seared Chilean Sea Bass with Saffron Buerre Blanc.
