Francesca Battistelli has today, April 22, released her third studio album titled "If We're Honest." The singer continues to charm in this latest release, as she has perfectly balanced being a wife, mother and having a successful musical career. It has been quite a journey for her since her debut release back in 2008. She has sung her way to the top since then and has earned a Grammy nomination for Best Gospel Performance, six Dove Awards and 22 Dove Award nominations. More-so both her debut album, "My Paper Heart" (certified Gold in 2012), and her 2011 sophomore release, "Hundred More Years," took the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Christian Album chart. The record is produced by her longtime collaborator Ian Eskelin, it also sees the singer honed songwriting skills as penned all the songs on the album except "Holy Spirit."
As she impresses once more in “If We Are Honest” with a friendly pop sound it is little wonder why I am up here listing out the top 5 reasons why you should get the album.
1. Pop, yet not cheesy
We can all agree that today's Pop music is synonymous with the word cheesy. So it is always a breath of fresh air when we get to hear pop records that are not straight-up predictably cheesy. "If We're Honest" is wonderfully done. Every single thing about this record speaks differently; from the way she harmonizes, and her sweet melodies that are so well crafted.
"If We're Honest" houses the most infectious and catchy songs of the year. Regardless of the sound I would lie if I said that the lyrics and songwriting are good because it is nothing short of excellent. "If We're Honest" captures the hearts of people from all groups - the worshipper, the saved, the lost, the unsaved. I mean there is a song for everyone on this album - a song that will usher one to a better understanding of God.
2. A gift
Now what exactly do I mean by the album being a gift? This album is a collection of songs that will uplift you, motivate you, encourage you and ultimately point you to Jesus. Music is God's gift to mankind, and in this case Francesca is the vessel that God is using to tell you - He is alive, I love you, I care about you, don't give up, get up and run to Jesus, you can make it and whatnot.
3. Spine-tingling sensation guaranteed
So what is a perfect album without spine-tingling moments? The album houses several moments of intense beauty, the type that you get goose pimple over. In other words, this album will give you those soul stirring moments where you will instantly get lost in the music. A few butterflies here and there is essential for every authentic album.
4. All Sons and Daughters
Not a lot of guest artists sang on this album, but we sure had a feel of the super talented Christian duo All Sons And Daughters. The duo joined Francesca to perform a song called "Tonight," and trust All Sons and Daughters to give a soaring performance, with melodies and harmonization that will blow one away. They basically plastered the icing on this musical cake with this lovely lullaby. My only grievance is that the song was way too short, exactly 3 minutes long.
5. Holy Spirit
By now it is no secret that "Holy Spirit" is one the most remarkable songs that Jesus Culture introduced to the world. Everyone from Kari Jobe to your church's worship team have performed the song. Francesca Battistelli gives a heartfelt rendition of the song that gives a new spin to the already hot song. I must say it fits so well to this all rounded album. When I saw Holy Spirit in the track list I quickly went and previewed the song to be sure it was the same song and how pleased I was when I heard her score it.
With all certainty "If We're Honest" is one of the best albums in the Christian pop genre I have heard this year. I also love that we are having really powerful records from female vocalist in the CCM, just like this record. She belted every single song on this 15-track album with intense passion and energy.
Since you took the time to read this I will let you in on a tip - get the deluxe version of this album because it contains three of the best songs on the album "Holy Spirit," Tonight," and the autobiographical "I Am Home."
