There are thousands of events scheduled during South by Southwest (SXSW) 2014. Admittedly that is an unmanageable number so we waded through the mountain of parties to find our top five music parties for you to attend.
Announcements on artists just added to SXSW in the last 48-hours are included in this party round-up. We love headliner acts, Kurt Vile, Gary Numan, Washed Out, Soundgarden, Phantogram and Blondie as much as the next guy, but we urge out-of-town attendees to see some of our favorite Texas bands like The Bright Light Social Hour, Quiet Company, Wheeler Brothers, Residual Kid, Holy Wave, The TonTons and Hard Proof.
The aforementioned Texas bands are scheduled to perform during SXSW. Most will play more than one show. The original purpose of SXSW is to expose up and coming acts to industry folks not already familiar with the artists. Use that intention to find a new group you like. Discover where any band will be performing and RSVP by visiting Do512.com's dedicated SXSW site and using the search function.
The 32nd Austin Music Awards is one such event where you can see Austin bands. We are mentioning it because the AMAs are not really a SXSW party (thus not in our list) but it does give people the chance to see some the best Austin musicians as voted by the Austin Chronicle readers.
Two years ago, Quiet Company won a record, ten awards at the AMAs. Grammy winner, Gary Clark Jr won six awards last year. Past "secret" special guests include Bruce Springsteen, Pete Townsend and Kris Kristofferson. Performances by Lucinda Williams, Ray Benson and the Texas Tornados have already been announced. Anonymous sources informed Examiner another eyebrow-raising surprise guest is slated for this year's awards. Tickets are still available. Badge and wristband holders will be admitted free.
SXSW does their best to offer free, non-badge holder events for residents and visitors alike. The biggest events are the free concerts at Auditorium Shores March 13-15. Due to construction, this year's shows are going to be at Butler Park (across the street from Auditorium Shores). The festival has already announced most of the lineup including Foster the People, Childish Gambino and a star-studded tribute to Jimi Hendrix.
Last year fans were treated to the first live performance of the Flaming Lips new album, "The Terror". It was an incredible show. The event requires a SXSW Guest Pass which will be available at the gates or in advance at select locations throughout Austin. Get more details on the Butler Park shows and where to obtain a Guest Pass from SXSW here.
Friendly reminder: Even (especially) if you are a SXSW veteran, please do your best to treat others with courtesy, consume plenty of water (between free drinks) and have a fun, safe week. Now jump to our short list of top SXSW music parties and get all the gory details.

Do512 The Big One
Do512 is the mothership for show listings in Austin. Since they know events so intimately, it makes sense they throw a great SXSW party. This year's is no exception. The line-up is stacked with great acts.
Headliner Gary Numan missed his last opportunity to play Austin (visa delays). He will appear at multiple parties throughout the music week. The Black Lips, Moon Taxi and Oberhofer are also on the schedule. See the full lineup and set times below.

Sailor Jerry House
Sailor Jerry has the right idea. Host a free, week-long party during SXSW music but skip the RSVP nonsense. In fact, the Sailor Jerry House at Gypsy Lounge will not give preferrential treatment to badge or wristband holders. It is first come, first serve with a bloody mary bar and free tattoos by artist Keith Underwood Wednesday through Saturday. Underwood's mentor learned from Norman "Sailor Jerry" Collins so there's an opportunity to get inked by a legacy tattooist. The only catch a wheel must be spun and your design will automatically be chosen from a variety of Sailor Jerry images. But if you love Sailor Jerry classics as much as we do, you will be pleased with your new body art.
Sailor Jerry has not announced the full week's schedule yet, but Saturday's lineup featuring Dum Dum Girls, Cosmonauts and Crazy Chief is already set in stone (see full schedule and set times below).

The Fader annually hosts one of the best unofficial SXSW events at the fort they build adjacent to Pine Street Station in East Austin. The RSVP list typically closes before music week begins (RSVP was still open as of today). Fader just began announcing artists to appear this week. Artists already revealed include Damon Albarn (Blur, Gorillaz), Chromeo, Temples, The Orwells and lots more.

Waterloo Records Day Parties
Another SXSW music week tradition is the free shows at Waterloo Records which is quite possibly the best independent record shop in the country. They do not require RSVP, badges or wristbands. Fans can simply show up (we recommend biking there) and see a ton a great bands. If there is something you really like hearing, then the opportunity to pick it up on vinyl or CD is as easy as wandering into the store.
The lineup is as good as ever with sets by Gary Numan, Tinariwen, Mobb Deep and Austin's own Wild Child. View the entire lineup and schedule below.
