A Week in WinterMaeve BinchyThe late Maeve Binchy’s last novel may also be her best.   A Week In Winter is about a group of different people bought together by the opening of a new bed and breakfast in a village on the coast of Ireland.   Like most of her previous work, this book is about people dealing with issues and choices as they go about their lives.  There are many characters in this book and their individual stories are so well developed that at times it seems like it could be a collection of short stories.  Fans of any of Binchy’s previous work will not want to miss this brilliant novel.IndiscretionCharles DubowThe plot of Charles Dubow’s Indiscretion is not original or new.   Harry and Maddy Winslow are a seemingly happy married couple with and ideal life until Harry decides to risk everything when  another women enters the picture.   Many parallels can be drawn to The Great Gatsby, the novel Charels Dunow seems to be paying homage to.  Like The Great Gatsby, the novel is told from the point of view of someone from the outside, making it impossible to answer the question of what motivates Harry to make the decisions he makes throughout the course of the novel.  Through clever writing, Dubow manages to avoid many of the common clichés that are often found in novels with similar plots.View the list »
House GirlTara ConklinTara Conklin’s novel The House Girl is the intertwining story of Lina, a young Lawyer in New York, and Josephina, a slave from Virginia in 1852.   Their stories start to connect when Lina begins working on a retribution case and becomes intrigued with the possibility that Josephina may the artist of the paintings made famous by the person that owned her.  Conklin switches between the two stories well; exploring both Josephina’s story, which takes place in a single day, and Lina’s life as she searches for the truth.   The novel starts out a little slow but it does not take long to become very intrigued with both the characters and their individual stories.

Throughout the month of February there have been many brilliant new releases in books with genres ranging from mystery to historical fiction. From debut novels to the last work of the beloved late Maeve Binchy, February has been a very good month for fiction.
