‘You’re Next’ is the latest in a long line of horror movies featuring killers wearing disturbing masks, a concept that has existed as far back as 'The Phantom Of The Opera' in 1925.
What it is that is so terrifying about the concept of a masked murderer, or masks in general?
The lack of emotion is one factor. One hopes that if you could see someone’s reactions, and read their face that they could be reasoned with. But with a mask you have no idea what they’re thinking, or if they can even hear what you’re saying. You have nothing to bargain with.
And the thought that the masked villain could be someone you know is also deeply disquieting.
But sometimes the mask doesn't belong to the killer, but to the victim instead. There's something equally terrifying about a victim trapped inside such defacement as punishment.
And simply put, a mask has a deforming quality to the wearer. They seem less human, less emotive, and more unpredictable.
