Greens and blues dominated the Fall 2013 list from Pantone this season, bringing about what Leatrice Eiseman called, “A sense of unity and continuity” between the men’s and women’s lists this year (as cited in Feitelberg, 2013, p.8). Among the list for women’s fashion there are three greens, one blue, one gray, one purple, one red, one brown, one orange, and one pink.
In comparison to the Spring 2013 list, there are some similarities from one season's palette to the other, which may assist those of you who enjoy transitioning looks as the weather allows. Emerald (Pantone 17-5641) is repeated this season which is a universally flattering color. Spring 2013’s Tender Shoots (Pantone 14-0446) looks similar to Fall 2013’s Linden Green (Pantone 15-0533), however, it has more yellow undertones to it which makes it more difficult to wear for many. Accessories might be more to one’s benefit in this color.
Spring’s African Violet (Pantone 16-3520) will find a friend in its deep purple cousin, fall’s Acai (Pantone 19-3628). Acai is beautifully rich for Fall 2013. The neutral shade of Carafe (Pantone 19-1116) is the perfect base for so many Fall 2013 looks. It is not just an ordinary, flat brown; rather it is a rich, warm brown that will go with many looks. Another more neutral shade is Turbulence (Pantone 19-4215), which is a blue-gray that the other colors will contrast off of nicely.
The popular Monaco Blue (Pantone 19-3964) from spring has been updated to the lighter shade of Fall 2013’s Mykonos Blue (Pantone 18-4434). Mykonos Blue is a refreshing shade, not a navy as Monaco Blue had been, and as Eiseman said, “[t]he teal undertone gives it a freshness that is not the same ole navy.” (as cited in Feitelberg, 2013, p.8). Fans of spring’s Poppy Red (Pantone 17-1664) will find fall’s Samba (Pantone 19-1662) and Vivacious (Pantone 19-2045) to be wonderful pops of bright color for the season. Samba is a wonderful and lively red. It has some orange undertones that make it quite bold. In contrast, Vivacious is a pink but not a Barbie pink© 2013 Mattel, Inc. Many will see Vivacious as having a hint of fuchsia in it, as the shade is rich and bright, with some purple undertones.
The last new shade for Fall 2013 is Koi (Pantone 17-1452). This color is reminiscent of spring’s nectarine (Pantone 16-1360) and 2012’s Tangerine Tango (Pantone 17-1463). Koi is deeper and richer than nectarine. One can breathe a sigh of relief and reuse previous season’s orange items if they work in your climate and to your tastes.
The official Pantone top ten fashion colors for women from least popular to most is: Vivacious, Koi, Carafe, Linden Green, Samba, Turbulence, Mykonos Blue, Emerald, Acai, and Deep Lichen Green.
