Valentine’s Day puts the pressure on for love and romance. Flowers, chocolates, and the good cards run out extremely fast. Restaurant reservations should have been made yesterday. Plans have to be made well in advance.

Consider escaping the hustle and bustle of everyone around you by celebrating Valentine’s Day at home with dinner and a movie. There are many ways to go about it. First, get any kids out of the house. Now, what kind of couple are you?

Are you foodies? Buy take-out from a good restaurant. Set out the nice china. Light two tall candles in between a single, pristine, red rose. Eat dinner, and then watch a movie.

But perhaps you are both laid-back. Buy Chinese take-out and eat dinner while watching a movie. Is it cold where you are? Light the fireplace or cuddle up underneath a blanket or a couch throw, which is slightly smaller if you catch my drift.

But what movie to watch? No worries. Here’s my top 10 list of romantic comedy movies. Why rom-com? Laughter brings people together, and love brings couples together. So go ahead. Pick a movie for your Valentine’s Day, or night, in.

  • "Just Like Heaven" (2005, PG-13, 95min) is both witty and funny as Elizabeth (Reese Witherspoon) and David (Mark Ruffalo) try to figure out why David is the only one that can see Lizzie's amnesiac spirit. Ruffalo's physical comedy is a must see in this movie about love that heals and reaches through any obstacle.
  • “The Back-up Plan” (2010, PG-13, 106min) is a romantic comedy about Zoe (Jennifer Lopez) and Stan (Alex O’Loughlin) falling in love while Zoe is pregnant with twins through artificial insemination. It reminds us that love comes when it wants to come, even if it means throwing our best laid out plans in disarray.
  • “Did You Hear About the Morgans?” (2009, PG-13, 103min) is about love that won’t give up even when Paul and Meryl Morgan are about to (Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker, respectively). Hilarity ensues as this urbanite couple gets put into protective custody in the middle of nowhere.
  • “27 Dresses” (2008, PG-13, 111min) is about the bridesmaid who’s always the bridesmaid. Jane (Katherine Heigl) and Kevin (James Marsden) are put together in circumstances Jane’s not too happy about, but love is about to send her down the aisle…as a bridesmaid, again.
  • “Valentine’s Day” (2010, PG-13, 125min) is aptly named as it happens on Valentine’s Day. With multiple story lines that cross and intersect, much like love does often, this is a star-studded movie about love in its many different forms.
