In 2003, Archos introduced the first full-screen music and video player. The AV300 was heavy, but it was also portable. The Archos AV300 played limited formats, but was still the coolest gadget on the market in 2003.

Last evening, CNN talked about the most innovative gadgets of the 2000s. Their top choice was the iPod, which they claimed changed the music industry forever. Other items on their list included the iPhone, the iPaq, the Amazon Kindle, and the Sony PlayStation Portable.

The 2000s really brought us a lot of new technology products that nobody thought would ever exist. Remember, during the early part of the decade, how exciting it was when you found out you can record television shows on a hard drive rather than a VHS tape? Remember how exciting it was that you can watch movies on your own phone?

Let's also not forget that before the iPad, there was the Tablet PC, which came out in 2002. Even though the Tablet PC had a very niche market (and poor battery life), it did lead the way for future tablets that we have today.

  • In January of 2006, Apple released its first MacBook Pro. The powerful notebook came in 15 and 17-inch versions. If you were one of the people who had a MacBook Pro in 2006, you were considered "cool." Now, if you have a MacBook Pro, you are just like everyone else.
  • In 2002, T-Mobile released the very first Pocket PC Phone Edition. This can be considered the first legit smartphone, although there were some Palm Pilot phones before this.
  • In the Summer of 2000, Compaq released the very first color Pocket PC. It was the very first pocketable device that allowed you to surf the Internet, organize your life, watch movies, and listen to music with a decent screen. The Pocket PC eventually evolved into the Windows Mobile Phone.
  • The first digital hard drive VCR was actually introduced in late 1999, but became mainstream in 2000. The device recorded all your favorite videos on a hard drive -- something which was revolutionary then. Because of Tivo, you could now fast forward through those boring commercials. No wonder why advertisers hated Tivo!
  • In late 2001, Apple introduced it's portable 5GB MP3 player much to the anger of the music industry. There were portable MP3 players before this, but none of them combined the coolness, ease of use, and sound quality of the iPod.
  • When released in June of 2007, the iPhone completely revolutionized the technology industry. Once again, Apple took an idea others created, made it their own, and made it commercial. Operating a device mostly with a light touch of your fingers was considered revolutionary in 2007. Now, it's the norm.
